What Motivates Community Volunteers to do What They do? A Q&A with Jillian Howsam-Adomeit.

In this instalment of "SuSo Asks", we're bringing you a Q&A with one of the most incredible community volunteers in North Durham! Jillian Howsam-Adomeit has been actively involved in community work for over 20 years, chairing the Port Perry Santa Claus Parade, serving as board member and advisor to the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, and assisting with the planning of other events such as “The Community Gift Giving Program” through Mary Kay which provides residents at the Port Perry Community Nursing Home with gifts on Christmas Day. She can be found lending a hand at Beer Fest, at the Winding Roads Festival and many other local events. She was included on the Mayor's Honour Roll in 2009 which recognizes those who give back to their community through service and was also awarded the inaugural Bob Brozina Volunteer of the Year award from the Scugog Chamber of Commerce in 2022. Let's get started! Join us as we ask Jillian about "Stepping Up" for her community: Kristen Meyer-Creamer: You're a familiar face at many local events, what motivates you to volunteer your time and energy to so many organizations? Jillian Howsan-Adomeit: I love giving back and knowing I am making a difference in my community. Volunteering is so much fun. It's all what you make it. The friendships I have developed over my years of volunteering has been priceless and I cherish each and everyone one as they all bring a special piece to the puzzle. What Motivates Community Volunteers to do What They do? A Conversation with Jillian Howsam-Adomeit. KMC: You are the Chair of the Santa Claus Parade for the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, can you tell us a little bit about how you got involved and how the role has evolved over the years?

JHA: I started volunteering when I was 12 years old as crowd control on Simcoe Street and later moved to Queen Street. Getting involved makes you feel like you have a huge purpose. I then became a director with the Chamber in 2003 and slowly moved up the ladder becoming the chair. I am so passionate about this event and want to ensure everyone can feel the efforts that go into ensuring this event is so successful.

KMC: Follow up question....what does bringing the Santa Claus parade to Scugog mean to you? JHA: It's magical and brings the community together to celebrate this special occasion. It gets us all in the Christmas spirit. Our Santa Claus Parade committee is by far the most brilliant and talented group that has so many creative ideas to ensure that everyone in our community is impressed and can feel the love of this event. KMC: Do you need to have special skills to volunteer or can you try different things to see what fits? JHA: My advice to you is if you want to volunteer try to get involved in anything and everything that interests you until you know what your passion is. You have to have fun and believe in the purpose for you to be successful. KMC: What are some of the skills that YOU have that you've found to be helpful in your volunteer work? JHA: You must be dedicated, compassionate, friendly, understanding, team player and committing yourself completely. KMC: What would be your best piece of advice for those looking to try out a volunteer position? JHA: Love the organization and what they stand for cause that will motivate you to give your all to them.

KMC: What does volunteerism mean to you and how has it impacted you over the years? What are the benefits for you?

JHA: Volunteering is everything to me. I truly love giving back to this amazing community. Volunteering is the most rewarding thing you will do and makes a huge difference to those that you are assisting in all aspects. It shows your support, love and dedication and helps make the organization a success. A very big thank you to Jillian for spending some time with Step Up Step Out!
